Every cub was warned of the dangers that lay beyond the pride's boarders the day they began their training. As they began to grow and learn, they were warned yet again. There was no doubt that sufficient warning was given to the offspring of the pride. However, there were those who were arrogant enough to ignore those warnings and chose to see what lay beyond the boundaries.
This was just such a situation.
It was only day five of training and one cub was already showing great promise. As well as great arrogance. His teacher, a muscular, deep green lioness named Kaida, took him to the side and once more reminded him that he had best pay attention in class lest he find himself facing the dangers beyond the boarder.
A curt 'Yes Ma'am' was given before he was dismissed back to the group. Kaida sighed and shook her head as she listened to him boasting about his skill to the his classmates once again. As was the nature of cubs.
...
As the next day dawned and her students were gathering, the lioness took notice that one cub was missing. None other than the boy she had scolded the previous day. A couple of cubs, two of the boy's closest friends, wore guilty expressions and avoided the teacher's looks. With this, she beckoned the two cubs forward with a gesture of her paw.
They shuffled forward, heads low and tails dragging. They refused to look at her.
"You are not in trouble, but you wouldn't happen to know where Ymer is would you?"
Her voice was low as to keep curious ears but maintained her calm and kind demeanor. Her jade-colored eyes were compassionate as she patiently waited for them to speak.
The cubs shifted uncomfortably, exchanging worried looks before the little female spoke up.
"Last night, after you dismissed class, we went to the boarder with a few of the older students. They were playing back and forth over the boundary, and Ymer got a little too bold.." she murmured, still not look at Kaida.
The male spoke up now. "We told him not to, Miss Kaida! We told him he'd get in trouble, but he didn't listen!" he cried, look up at her with pleading eyes. The lioness had always had a soft spot for cubs. "But he did it anyway.. When we were leaving, he stayed with the older cubs.. and.. and.. and we haven't seen him since.."
Tears welled in the cub's eyes. She pulled him near to her, holding him for a moment before rising to her paws.
The ogre-faced female turned her attention to her students. "Class, today we will be having a different kind of session. I will not be training you today, but instead you will be learning with Inna's class." she informed them, knowing the pride-maned male would not mind the extra cubs.
With that, the lioness exited the cave. She would retrieve the overly zealous cub and would for certain give him a stern talking to. Her tail dragged lifelessly behind her as she trotted out of the cave.
...
A stiff breeze blew from across the invisible boundary, buffeting the lioness as she stood on the pride's land. She took a deep and steadying breath before taking that first step across the marker. She placed her nose to the stone, attempting to locate the cubs' scents. It took a bit of work for her as she was a bit rusty, but she finally managed to locate the trail of the wayward cub and set off in that direction.
He had gone quite a ways for one so small, but the former fighter was determined to find him. That fire burned in her gaze as she followed onward. Loosing his trail occasionally, she some how managed to stray from his track. She sighed, bringing herself to a stop in an attempt to refrain from getting frustrated. Her lack of any headway was wearing at her patience, however.
A light breeze worked itself up once more, carrying on it Ymer's scent. Kaida spun on her paws, racing across the barren lands with a renewed spark.
She ran a ways into the wind before it began to die back. Yet again she lost his scent only to pick up another. However this was not the cub's. Furrowing her brow in both curiosity and defense, the decided to follow it. She hadn't yet found the cub, but perhaps this new lion, whoever they were, had anything to tell her of where he went.
It was difficult to track over the stone, but the bones that scattered the ground held scent incredibly well. She knew she was on the right track. Before she knew it, however, a dark shape loomed in the near distance. She chose to pick up her pace.
At the sound of her limp tail clattering and scraping over the ground, the shape was alerted of her presence. It stood, attentive and defensive, watching as a shape approached. It was another lion, that became apparent to them both.
"Hello!" Kaida called out, sounding hurried but friendly, "Have you seen a cub pass through here?"
The lion quickly took form before her. Long, tattered ears and a scar across his face. Fangs protruded from beneath his lower lip, as hers did. Fierce blue eyes burned against blue-grey fur and boney growths ran down his back before all flesh and fur vanished into a long tail of bone. The guards of his tail were massive. Certainly someone she hoped was not aggressive.
The stranger to his lands was a lioness who smelled of the pride's property. He narrowed his eyes in a distrustful manner, but did not attack. Her voice was friendly, something he was certainly not used to. She was a dull green, vivid golden marks framing her shoulders. Thick, short horns grew from between her ears as did fangs from her lower jaw. Her tail hung lifelessly behind her, no doubt the cause of the sound that alerted him to her being there. She was strange look for a female.
He thought over her words for a moment before simply shaking his head. If there had been a cub, he would not have known of it's being there. Frankly he found he did not have reason to notice. Cubs were never something he watched for. Other lions, however, were. Especially those belonging to the warring pride and rebellion. They were never seen alone, and he did not doubt that there would be others joining her shortly.
With a sigh, Kaida politely thanked him for his time before turning back to her hunt and leaving the ghastly looking male behind her. Shortly after leaving him she managed to locate the Ymer's scent, and it was strong. He had just passed through. Her paws pounded over the ground, and as she weaved through a small field of boulders the sounds of roaring- both cub and lion- could be heard.
She pressed on as quick as she could, breaking from between two rocks just in time to see a ghostly black lion bring itself down upon the cub, grasping him in it's jaws and tossing it hard against the ground. Ymer didn't move. With a pang of sorrow, the lioness knew he was dead. His spirit would join that of the corrupt soul that had murdered him.
Anger began bubbling in her veins, and with a roar she erupted onto the field. She locked into battle with the dead soul, aiming a venom-filled blow at it's neck and head. It lashed it's tail, drawing it's tail blades down her side and cutting her deep.
Kaida grunted against the blow, but pushed to over power the spirit. It would be a long and difficult struggle, and she knew she was at a disadvantage without use of her tail.
...
With the lioness leaving, Spent turned away to head back to his den. He did not want to meet anymore lions. One had been too much. However the lioness had interested him. He did not know why, but she did. Twitching his whiskered, he reluctantly settled on following her and her progression in her mission.
He knew this would be a bad idea. His intuition told him not to follow her, that there would be others and to go back to his den, but she had been so full of life despite her injury. He wanted to know why this was. He trailed a ways behind, following her scent with a slow and steady confidence. It irritated him some, knowing he shouldn't but doing so anyway. He large male huffed at himself, shaking his head. He kept going.
The boulder field made him feel a little more comfortable. There were more places to hide. Perhaps even a meal among the rocks. Though with the sounds of a struggle reaching his ears he found finding a snack unlikely. He did not pick up his pace or get in any sort of a hurry as he picked his way through the rocks, instead taking his time to reach the end of the stretch of large rocks.
Tucking himself between two boulders with a clear enough view, he peeked around it to see what was happening. His brow arched in interest as he saw the lioness engaged with an evil spirit. She was skilled, but lacked proper balance. Her lifeless tail was only hindering her progress. He could tell she would have easily been able to over power the spirit had she proper use of her limb.
Despite his usual attentiveness, he was too wrapped up in watching the two before him battle for dominance and failed to take notice of the sound of approaching paws until it was too late. The scratching clatter of metal-on-metal startled him and as three lions raced past him, he was too slow to escape the two that brought up quickly behind them.
